Thirukkural

By [Bala Ramadurai] | 0001-01-01

write a conversation between a father, Rajamani, grandfather, Sahasranamam and Lata, Rajamani’s 8 year old daughter, where initially Sahasranamam explains the meaning of the kural to his son with an every day example and then Rajamani explains the meaning to his daughter with an example from One Piece. Make it humourous as well. The script I will read out should be about 4 minutes long.

Record TAD - Launch of TAD

Hello I am Bala Ramadurai. Today is January 15th, Thiruvalluvar day. Thiruvalluvar was one of ancient India’s greatest poets and philosophers. His 1330 poems pack a punch, covering topics like love, loyalty, and living life on your own terms - it’s like having the ultimate guide to navigating life’s complexities.

I am a Thirukkural enthusiast. I read and learn Thirukkural from various sources on the internet and from various scholars who have learnt the poems before me. Today, we are launching a unique podcast called Thirukkural A Day or TAD.

Imagine immersing yourself in Thiruvalluvar’s timeless wisdom.

You will meet Rajamani, a philosopher at heart, and his daughter Lata, who brings her unique perspective as an anime enthusiast. Together with Rajamani’s dad, Sahasranamam, a treasure trove of knowledge, the fictional trio will dive into these ancient poems and uncover their relevance in our modern world.

Join me on a journey as I embark on this adventure, you’ll discover how these ancient poems can be your roadmap to living a more purposeful, meaningful life. So, join me every day as I explore Thirukkural, starting today, on what promises to be an unforgettable journey - one poem at a time, one Thirukkural a day.

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 1:1 - Beginning Project

Write the script for the episode

What is a Thirukkural? It is a 1.5 line poem about life, philosophy, and everything in between.

Listen to the conversations between a philosopher wannabe Rajamani, anime-obsessed daughter Lata and fountain of knowledge grandfather Sahasranamam together talk about the 1330 poems that Poet Thiruvalluvar wrote thousands of years ago.

“Enna, di? You are always watching this boy elongate his arms or his legs. Why don’t you do something worthwhile with your time?” Rajamani thundered from across the room.

Without looking at her dad, Lata bit her nails. Her right hand was up in the air signalling something.

“Two minutes, pa.”

“How many more episodes will you watch of this anima?”

Lata lifted her gaze from the screen and looked at Rajamani.

“Appa, that’s anime not anima. This is the latest episode. It is so cool!”

“Niruthu, di. I have had my fair share of cartoons in my life. But, this one’s nonsensical.”

“How do I get her off these cartoons and how do I get her to read Tamil literature?” Rajamani thought to himself. “I don’t know enough Tamil literature myself. How am I ever going to tell her about Tamil literature?”

He called up his father, Sahasranamam. He explained the problem to him.

“You could talk about Kamba Ramayanam,” Sahasranamam suggested.

“Appa, she knows that already.”

“Ponniyin Selvan?”

“She has seen the movies several times. I can’t read 2400 pages anyway.”

“What about Silappadigaram?” Sahasranamam’s 3rd suggestion.

“I won’t be able to understand it myself. I need something short and sweet and I can find it easy to understand.”

Loud music from the next room. Some old Tamil movie was about to start. His wife was probably starting to watch a movie.

“Can’t she keep the volume down?” asked Sahasranamam. “Your mother does the same thing to me.”

“Agara mudala ezhuthellaam aathi bhagavan mudatre ulagu” blared the TV.

“Appa, this Vijaya is blaring the TV all the time.”

“Is that Thirukkural? Why don’t you try Thirukkural, it is. One and a half line poetry. You can ask me and I’ll explain them to you. You can then explain it to Lata Kutty.”

Rajamani put the phone down.

“Thirukkural, it seems. My teeth hurts everyone I try to recite one kural at one go. Reminds me of all my teachers who tortured me to learn up all those kurals. Appappa!”

Rajamani took his iPad out and browsed for a website with all of the Thirukkurals, all 1330 of them.

This is perfect. It has English translations too.

“Lata, Episode over, no? Come here. I’ll read out a poem. Tell me what you think.”

“No, two minutes.”

“Aiyo, not another episode. Stop it immediately. Come here.”

Lata stomped from her corner of the room and sprang onto Rajamani’s lap as if she were a cat. She curled up ready to go to sleep.

“Oh no, you don’t!” Rajamani tickled her with one hand and Lata burst out laughing.

“I am going to tell you a poem.”

“No, no, no, no, no, no…”

“Stop! take a breath atleast.”

Rajamani made Lata to sit up.

“Listen, I’ll start with one and see if you like it.”

“But you have to watch One Piece with me, then.”

“Ok, deal.”

Rajamani took out his ipad from his table and browsed to a website and started with the first Kural.

“அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.”

“How much more of this poem?” asked Lata.

“It’s done.”

“What? That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“What does it mean?”

“The letter A is the first of the alphabet, the same way, God is the first in this entire world. Hmm… What do you think, Kanna?”

“Just like how Luffy had to learn Gum-Gum pistol before he took out the bad guys.”

“What?” Rajamani tried making sense of what Lata had just said.

“In One Piece, Luffy, the hero, has to learn so many new tricks every time a new bad guy shows up. The same way, if we have to survive in this world, we have to keep learning new tricks.”

“Exactly. Everytime, I learn a new language…”

“But, you don’t know any languages. You are a makku, as Amma calls you.”

“Huh? Your mother called me a makku? I am no makku. What does she know about me?”

“Amma….” Lata yelled.

“Ssshhh… Keep it down…” Rajamani hoped that his wife couldn’t hear him in the next room.

“When I start… If I start learning a new language, I will start with the alphabet.”

“Just like Luffy…”

“You and your Luffy…”

“Lata, repeat after me.

அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.

Let’s see if you remember what the meaning is?

“The letter A is the first of the alphabet, the same way, God is the first in this entire world. Correct?”

“Correct, my chellam. When you want to learn something new, you have to start from the basics.”

Rajamani carefully put away his iPad.

Lata sprung out of her dad’s lap with renewed energy.

“Let’s watch this One Piece from the first episode… Together.”

Sahasranamam started laughing.

“Appa, I am going to put the phone down, if you are going to just keep laughing.”

“Your phone call is the meaning of the Kural.”

“Sutham. I don’t get it at all. How can a phone call be the meaning of a Kural? I am trying to get Lata interested in Thirukkural and if I go tell her that my calling my father when I don’t understand a Kural, she’s going to quit listening to me.”

“Asathu” said Sahasranamam. “What does one do when one does not know the answer? You ask someone who knows more than you. That’s what the Kural is.”

“You could have told me so without laughing. Seri…”

Before Rajamani could finish his sentence, Sahasranamam had already put down the phone.

“Lata… Inge vaa maa…”

“Shall we discuss the next Kural?”

“Did you ask Thatha for the meaning?” asked Lata.

Rajamani thought long and hard about the third Kural.

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார் நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்

“What did the website say the meaning was?

They who are united to the glorious feet of Him who passes swiftly over the flower of the mind, shall flourish long above all worlds”

He picked up the phone and called Sahasranamam.

“Rajamani, think of the time you wanted to get married to our neighbour.”

“Yes, and you gave me a thrashing and asked me to finish my 8th standard first before thinking of such things.”

“Kadavule! Not your 8th standard fling. When you were working for your first company…”

“Appa, don’t bring that up now. Vijaya is not too far off.”

“No, all I wanted to tell you was that you tried to get everybody convinced that you were doing the right thing. You got Vishnu Periappa, Anantu Athimber, Saama mami…”

“Yes, I know what I did. What’s your point?”

“If you want a mission fulfilled, you have to orient people to your mission and everything else falls in line. That is the meaning of the Kural.”

“Everyone except you. Hello.. Hello… Che, this man doesn’t listen to anything that I want to say.”

Putting the phone down, he called out to his 8-year old.

“Lata Kutti…”

“Two minutes”

“Are you like that noodles ad?”

“What?”

“Oh never mind, that was an ad from way before your time.”

“I have the next Kural. Do you want to listen to it?”

“Yes, as long as you explain to me with examples from One Piece.”

“Yes, yes, I know.”

“மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார் நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்

and its meaning - They who are united to the glorious feet of Him who passes swiftly over the flower of the mind, shall flourish long above all worlds.”

“And? Luffy?”

“What did Luffy want to become?”

“King of the pirates.”

“How did he get all his teammates including that long nosed fellow?”

“Usopp.” She started giggling holding her nose straight. “He also believed that Luffy would eventually become the King of the Pirates.”

“What about Zoro?”

“Yes, him too. All of them believed that Luffy would become the King of the Pirates.”

“So, this Kural says that if you are all united under one mission, one goal, one entity like God, you will be able to achieve anything you want, anything not just in this world, but the other worlds as well.”

“Even the New World?”

“Yes, yes. The Kural again -

மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார் நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்.”

“Let’s watch the episode where Luffy meets Usopp for the first time and how Usopp keeps lying about his own army… Hehe…”

“Ok, let’s do that, Kutty.”

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 1:4 - Against evil Project

Write the script

“This is the Kural for today.

வேண்டுதல்வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல

The english translation from the website is To those who meditate the feet of Him who is void of desire or aversion, evil shall never come.”

Rajamani said out loud reclining on his sofa.

“Oh, I can’t make head or tail of this,” he said while keeping his iPad on the table.

“I can’t keep calling him. Appa might think I am an idiot. The kural asks me to meditate and I will meditate now.”

Rajamani sat up and closed his eyes.

Two seconds later opened his eyes and called his father, Sahasranamam.

“Appa, do you think I am an idiot?”

“No, you are not an idiot. You are the CEO of your company. Yes, there are only 10 people in your company, but you are the CEO all the same. You do the job not for the monetary gain, but for the love of the job. You will do very well as long as you have this spirit.”

“That is the meaning of the 4th kural? Hello.. Hello…”

“Why does he keep doing this? Pickup the phone and talk without a hello. End without a bye-bye.”

“Lata Kutty, this time, you tell me what the meaning might be.” Rajamani said while walking into Lata’s room.

Lata was nowhere to be found. “Lata.. Lata…”

He saw Lata in the balcony of her room, sitting upright and eyes closed.

“Lata…” his voice down to a whisper.

He softly spoke the Kural into her ears.

“Can… you… guess… what… it… means?”

“Why are you whispering?

I know the meaning of this. When Luffy sees ferocious animals, rather than conquer them by force or beating them up, he tames them by looking into their eyes and making them his friends,” said Lata.

“Adi sakkai. This One Piece is making you smart. Exactly. When does this happen in One Piece?”

“That bull in Dressrosa, remember? It is a ferocious one and everyone is scared of it. Luffy takes one look at it in a very calm manner and the evil in the Bull’s eye turns into friendliness. He also carries the bull later when the bull is hurt.”

“Beautiful. So, one has to be calm and think about the good of others and no evil can touch you.”

“Ok, let’s read the Kural again, Appa.”

“Why are you hurrying me?”

“I want to watch that episode again. Quick.”

“The two-fold deeds that spring from darkness shall not adhere to those who delight in the true praise of God.”

“Rajamani, this kural you’ve been studying is quite complex. Let me explain it to you through an example.”

“Aiyo, is it one of your long stories?”

“Hmm.. No.. My stories are never long.”

“Last time you started with the name of your street and ended with how Jahangir become the emperor.”

“Ok, I’ll talk about our neighbours then. One of them is a thief who only steals from the rich and gives to the poor, while the other is a philanthropist who donates everything he has to charity.”

“Did you just call Manish a thief? He’s an honest person.”

“My examples are imaginary. Now, let’s say both of these individuals are confronted by their neighbors about their actions. The thief might try to justify his crimes by saying he’s doing it for the greater good, but the philanthropist would not be able to make a similar claim. Why? Because the philanthropist is using his wealth to help others, whereas the thief is using it to harm others.

“I see what you mean, Appa. The two-fold deeds don’t stick to someone who genuinely does good in the world.”

“Exactly. Let me see how you explain this to your daughter Lata. But do you know why your street is called Annammacharya road?”

“Aiyo…”

(Later)

“Inge vaadi. I am going to ask you a question.

“Is it about Thirukkural or One Piece?”

“One piece. We saw that episode where Sanji steals food and feeds to a pirate Gin. Do you think it was right or wrong on Sanji’s part to do that?”

“That is tough. I would say that Sanji can’t claim he’s doing good just because he steals food for others. He’d have to admit that stealing is wrong too, even if his intentions are pure,” said Lata.

“Appaadi, you are wise for a 8 year old. So the kural is saying that we can’t hide behind our good intention and pretend it is all fine even though the deed is wrong.”

“So, Robin Hood is not right and does deserve to be imprisoned.”

“You could say that, Kutty.”

Appa simplifies the meaning through an example:

A thief who steals for the “greater good” and a philanthropist who gives selflessly—both confronted by their neighbors, yet only one has clean hands.

Later, Lata adds her take, connecting it to One Piece: Sanji steals food for a pirate, but even with good intentions, stealing is wrong.

“பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்

Sounds like someone’s trying to break up with their Netflix subscription.”

“Right? But what if it means living a life without distractions?

“Well, that might mean giving up your phone, social media, and all the other things you’re addicted to. It sounds like a detox program for adults,” said Sahasranamam.

“Exactly! And it’s not just about cutting out physical desires, but also avoiding false promises and lies.”

“That’s what I call living by God’s truthful path. You know, no more ‘I’ll pay you back next week’ or ‘I’ll do that later’.”

“If we live with honesty and integrity, our lives will be prosperous. Hello…”

“There he goes again, cutting off everything from me.”

“I might even find true happiness – the kind that doesn’t come with a side of chocolate cake, " said Rajamani out loud to himself.

Those who stand on the path of honesty, devoid of desires stemming from the five senses, will live a prosperous life devoid of falsehood, according to God’s truthful path.

This is our today’s Kural.

What do you think?”

“That sounds cool. But I can’t think of anything from One Piece.”

“Hmm.. That’s a first. I will try to do this - Even though they were pirates, legendary pirates like Gol D. Rogers or Whitebeard led a life of righteousness and helped their own people and villages in the time of need. They stuck to their own truths and that led them to commanding more respect from their teammates. “Those who stand on the path of honesty, devoid of desires stemming from the five senses, will live a prosperous life devoid of falsehood, according to God’s truthful path.” ✨

Rajamani discusses distractions with his father, Sahasranamam, considering if living a life without sensory desires means cutting out distractions like social media and lies. Sahasranamam links it to living truthfully, leading to prosperity and happiness. Rajamani then relates it to One Piece, noting that legendary pirates like Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard embodied this kind of truthfulness, earning respect even in adversity.

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 1:7 - Anxiety Project

தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால் மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது

Anxiety of mind cannot be removed, except from those who are united to the feet of Him who is incomparable.

Rajamani sat with a thoughtful expression, running his fingers over his peppered beard as he pondered. He asked his father, Sahasranamam, “What does it truly mean?”

“It means that as long as our minds are clouded by anxiety and worry, we can’t find inner peace. But when we turn to God, or a higher power, we start to feel grounded and at ease.”

“Okay, got it. So like how I need my phone charger to charge my phone?”

Sahasranamam laughed and said, “Not exactly! In the case of your phone, you use it to connect to the outside world and keeps you calm in cases when you are troubled, turning to God or a higher power helps us connect to something bigger than ourselves and fills our hearts with peace.”

“Right now, I’m feeling anxious about my One Piece marathon with Lata. Hello… hello…”

“Remember the marathon, Appa?” asked Lata, with a twinkle in her eyes.

Rajamani gave Lata the example that his father had given him.

“Explain to me with your One Piece example.”

“Let’s see. Imagine Luffy and his crew are on a mission to find the legendary One Piece treasure. They’re getting anxious about not finding it soon, and their nerves are getting all frayed.”

“Okay.”

“But then they remember that it’s not just about finding the treasure - it’s about the journey, their friendships, and the adventures they have along the way. So instead of worrying about the outcome, they focus on enjoying the ride.”

“This is why he keeps yelling ‘I am going to be the King of the Pirates at the end of every episode?”

Lata laughed and continued, “Just like how Luffy doesn’t need to worry about the Devil Fruit power-ups, we don’t need to stress about our goals if we remember what’s truly important - our relationships and our own inner strength.”

Rajamani reflects on the 7th Thirukkural:

“Anxiety of mind cannot be removed, except from those who are united to the feet of Him who is incomparable.”

Rajamani struggles with anxiety and asks his father, Sahasranamam, for guidance. Sahasranamam explains that only by turning to a higher power can we find peace. Rajamani humorously compares it to needing a phone charger to stay calm, but Sahasranamam clarifies that true peace comes from within, not from external distractions.

Rajamani and Lata later connect it to One Piece—how Luffy and his crew find peace in the journey, rather than obsessing over the treasure. Luffy’s focus on the adventure over the goal echoes the message of the Kural: inner peace comes from letting go of anxiety and focusing on what truly matters.

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 1:8 - Temptations Project

அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால் பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது

None can swim the sea of vice, but those who are united to the feet of that gracious Being who is a sea of virtue.

“Appa, as always give me an example to explain this kural to me,” said Rajamani.

“Imagine we’re standing at the edge of a lake, and on the other side is a big boat filled with all sorts of tempting goodies - chocolates, video games, etc.”

“Yeah? That sounds like Gundodaran Mama’s house!”

Sahasranamam chuckled and said, “Exactly! Who do you think he gave his name, the fat one, Gundodaran?”

“I didn’t know you gave people nicknames, Appa,” said Rajamani sarcastically.

“Can we focus on the kural? If we take refuge in the feet of a virtuous Being, it’s like finding a lifeline that keeps us safe from all those temptations. We can focus on our goals and not get distracted by all the ‘goodies’ around us.”

“Okay, got it. Stay away from Gundodaran Mama.”

“Lata kutty, I got the example myself this time. This is that episode where Nami is offered the chance to keep all the money she’s stolen if she betrays Luffy and the crew. Instead, she chooses to fight for her friends, even though it risks everything she’s worked for.”

“That’s from the Arlong Park arc, right, Appa?” said Lata.

“Yes, absolutely. Nami stabs her own arm to remove Arlong’s tattoo, rejecting the life she had under his rule. It’s about choosing loyalty and freedom over the temptation of security and wealth.”

“I cried when I saw that episode. I felt sorry for Nami.”

“But Luffy, her loyal friend helped her out, correct?”

“None can swim the sea of vice, but those who are united to the feet of that gracious Being who is a sea of virtue.”

Sahasranamam uses an example involving a lake and a tempting boat full of chocolates and video games to explain the idea of resisting distractions. He compares finding refuge in a virtuous path to staying safe from temptations, much like staying away from “Gundodaran Mama’s house” for Rajamani.

They also reflect on One Piece, particularly Nami’s choice to betray her past and embrace friendship over wealth and power. Rajamani uses this to highlight how resisting temptations, like Nami rejecting Arlong’s offer, requires inner strength and a commitment to higher values.

Sahasranamam, Rajamani and Lata were on the dinner table with Lata playing with a toy ship. Sahasranamam was reading his book on Thirukkural, while Rajamani was fiddling with his smartphone.

Sahasranamam looked up and realized that Lata was getting bored and had stopped eating.

“Lata, do you still learn about the Thirukkural from your Appa?” asked Sahasranamam.

“Ahem, yes, she does. I keep telling…” replied Rajamani.

“I was asking her. She needs someone whom she can bank on, a someone who is without any judgement, someone who keeps reading the book, " said Sahasranamam, while pointing at his book.

“Just like Luffy would not have taken being a pirate and that too the legendary Straw Hat Pirate without Shanks. It will be like someone telling you about Thirukkural who doesn’t know anything about the knowledge of One Piece.”

Sahasranamam fell silent.

“Appa, let’s keep this cycle going. You are my master and I’ll get what I want from you and I will tell Lata what I know.”

“Wait.. Wait.. So, is this the meaning of the Kural as well?”

“Yes, da, Kutty. One should surrender oneself to another person, an entity,” said Rajamani.

Rajamani, Lata, and Sahasranamam are having dinner when the conversation takes a deeper turn, discussing the 9th Thirukkural:

“The head that worships not the feet of Him who is possessed of eight attributes, is as useless as a sense without the power of sensation.”

Sahasranamam points out that without a guide, someone to lean on for wisdom and direction, we become like a sense without the ability to perceive. Rajamani compares it to Luffy’s journey in One Piece—just as Luffy needed Shanks to inspire his path as a pirate, we need someone who embodies wisdom to help us find our way.

Rajamani suggests that true learning comes from humility and surrender to a higher knowledge or guide, much like how Luffy sought guidance from Shanks.

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 1:10 - Ocean - Birth-Rebirth Project

Write the script

பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார் இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்

They swim the sea of births, the ‘Monarch’s’ foot who gain; None others reach the shore of being’s mighty main.

None can swim the great sea of births but those who are united to the feet of God.

[Scene opens in a serene village home, decades ago. A young Rajamani sits by the riverbank, watching his father, Sahasranamam, wash his feet after prayer.]

Sahasranamam: “Rajamani, today’s lesson is about a powerful truth from Thiruvalluvar. Listen closely: ‘பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார் இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.’

It means, ‘Those who hold on to the feet of the Divine can cross the vast ocean of birth and life, while those who don’t, remain stranded.’ What do you think this ocean is?”

Young Rajamani: (thinking) “Is it… this river, Appa?”

Sahasranamam: (smiling) “No No… It’s bigger than the river. Imagine it’s the vast ocean of life, filled with waves of challenges, struggles, and desires. Now tell me, how do you cross an ocean?”

Young Rajamani: “With a boat, Appa!”

Sahasranamam: “Exactly! The boat is the grace and wisdom of the Divine. If you try to swim alone, the currents of anger, greed, and sorrow will pull you under. But if you hold on to the boat—your principles, your faith—you’ll make it safely to the shore.”

[Scene fades to the present day. Rajamani and his daughter, Lata, are sitting on the floor, folding laundry. Lata pauses to ask a question while holding a One Piece T-shirt.]

Lata: “Appa, do you think pirates believe in God? Like, in One Piece, Luffy doesn’t pray or anything, but he’s so fearless.”

Rajamani: “Interesting question, Lata. Do you remember when Luffy and his crew faced Enel on Skypiea?”

Lata: “Of course! Enel thought he was a god, but Luffy defeated him because he had no fear of lightning.”

Rajamani: “Exactly. Now think of Enel as someone who represents the waves of arrogance and greed, the kind that sinks most people. But what saved Luffy?”

Lata: (excitedly) “His unwavering belief in himself and his dream! He didn’t let Enel’s so-called godlike power scare him.”

Rajamani: “And what do you think gave Luffy that strength? His nakama, his principles, and his complete focus on his goal. That’s what Thiruvalluvar means here. The ‘Divine feet’ symbolize holding on to values greater than yourself. They give you the strength to cross the ocean of life.”

Lata: “So, you’re saying Luffy’s faith in his crew is like someone’s faith in God or in good principles?”

Rajamani: “Exactly, ma. Without such a foundation, even the bravest person will falter. Luffy’s crew is his boat. Without them, he wouldn’t get far.”

[Lata nods thoughtfully, folding the T-shirt with care.]

Host: “And now, dear viewers, think about your own life. What is your ‘boat’ in this vast ocean of existence? Is it faith, family, discipline, or perhaps a dream you’re striving toward?

What keeps you afloat when the waves of doubt, fear, or temptation rise high? Reflect on Thiruvalluvar’s wisdom: holding on to something greater than yourself is the key to crossing life’s challenges.

The ocean is vast, but with the right boat, the shore is always within reach. Until next time, may your journey be steady and your values unwavering.”

[The scene fades with soft flute music and an image of a calm ocean under a sunrise.]

Thirukkural A Day - TAD - Chapter 2:1 - Can small acts of kindness create a massive impact? Project

Write the script

By the continuance of rain, the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia.

  1. How does something small, like a raindrop or a kind act, create massive impact?
  2. Can wisdom truly be universal, bridging generations, cultures, and even anime universes?

The cramped yet orderly chamber lay in eerie stillness, the usual hum of the engines absent, leaving only the silent booths and the bolted-down table pressing against the walls.

“Dearest Lata Kutty, this may be the last letter I write to you,” Rajamani put the pen down, wondering if it was indeed his last hour. His hands trembled slightly as he stared at the rest of the page, the words refusing to come. Creaking noises all around him, a metallic groan that echoed through the narrow corridors. He glanced at the flickering light above, its dim glow casting long shadows on the walls. Outside the thick porthole, the dark abyss of the ocean loomed, a reminder of how far they were from the surface.

Thirty-six hours earlier…

“It will be a day or maximum two before I come back home,” said Rajamani to his tearful daughter, Lata. Her pink skirt billowed in the persistent wind that swept through the bustling port where they were all gathered. She hugged her grandfather, Sahasranamam, tight, her small fingers clutching his weathered hand. The old man stood tall, his face a mask of calm, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of worry.

“Look, kutty, I am carrying these books with me—Thirukkural and One Piece. I will try to call you once in a while to discuss Thirukkural and Lappy,” said Rajamani, holding up the worn copies.

Lata looked at him, her sad expression changing to one of mock anger. She broke into a smile, shaking her head at her goofy dad.

“Even I know that it is Luffy,” said the 70-year-old retired baker, Sahasranamam, playfully. “I am proud of you. I’ll take care of her.”

Rajamani bid them farewell from the bottom of the slanted stairs leading to the submarine. He took one last look at the shore and the skies, the horizon a blur of gray clouds and choppy waves. A raindrop fell from above onto his lips, cool and fleeting. He licked it absentmindedly, the taste of salt and freshness mingling on his tongue.

By the continuance of rain, the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia.

“Ambrosia—the food of the gods indeed,” thought Rajamani as he entered the hatch of the submarine. The heavy metal door clanged shut behind him, sealing him inside the belly of the beast. The air was thick with the scent of oil and steel, a far cry from the open skies and fresh rain he had left behind.

Rajamani went straight to the kitchen, his tools slung over his shoulder. He found the person he was looking for. Mali, the submarine’s chef, stood by the counter, his rotund frame clad in a spotless white uniform. He took off his chef’s hat and shook Rajamani’s hand, his grip firm and welcoming.

“Here I am. All because I helped you lift your luggage at the airport,” said Rajamani, a wry smile tugging at his lips.

“Welcome to the tube. It all starts with a simple act of kindness,” Mali replied, his hearty laughter filling the small space. His belly jiggled with each chuckle, a comforting sight in the otherwise sterile environment.

“Of course, Maan, you jump through ten hoops before they take you as supplier. Brutal…,” Mali added, his tone light but his eyes sharp.

He led Rajamani to his bunk bed, a cramped space with dim, flickering lights that made the room feel even smaller. Rajamani wondered if he would ever get used to the jigsaw-puzzle-like arrangement, the claustrophobic confines of life underwater. Thankfully, he had to stay only for the night.

As if reading Rajamani’s thoughts, Mali said “Don’t worry, we never go under da water with civvies.”

“That’s a relief!”

“You have me for company, Maan,” said Mali and flicked his chef hat sideways.

“Just as Luffy relies on Sanji’s cooking to keep him strong and energized, I too will be a constant presence in the kitchen, working with you,” Rajamani said, trying to lighten the mood.

Mali raised an eyebrow. “Luffy? Sanji?”

Rajamani chuckled. “Long story, Mali. My daughter got me into this manga, anime thing, and now I am addicted. Luffy and Sanji are characters in that anime. Luffy is the captain who loves food, and Sanji is the best chefs in their pirate world.”

Before Mali could respond, a siren blared through the submarine, its shrill sound cutting through the air like a knife. Rajamani froze, his heart pounding in his chest.

“What does that mean?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Wait for it. It could be drill,” replied Mali, craning his neck in different directions, his usual jovial demeanor replaced by a tense alertness.

The announcement came moments later, cold and clinical. “This is not a drill. All personnel, man your posts. I repeat, All personnel, man your posts. This is not a drill.”

Mali turned to Rajamani, his expression grim. “Sorry, Raja. We are going under da water…”

Rain produces good food, and is itself food.

  2. Can something be both a process and a result simultaneously?

“Dearest Lata, this may be the last letter I write to you, " Rajamani put the pen down wondering if it was his last hour.

Thirty-six hours earlier, Rajamani had entered a submarine and met his friend and chef, Mali. Unexpectedly, the submarine went underwater.

Mali turned to Rajamani, his expression grim. “Sorry, Raja. We are going under da water…”

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken implications. Rajamani felt a chill run down his spine as the submarine began its descent, the walls groaning under the pressure of the ocean. He thought of Lata, of Sahasranamam, of the rain that had kissed his lips just moments ago. And he wondered if he would ever see them again.

“But wh.. why? We were supposed to stay at port for 2 days. Captain Caspian promised me so” wondered Rajamani.

“They never tell me. I am the damn chef. I keep thinking me Steven Seagal of Under Siege, but look at me, Maan…” pointing at his pot belly.

Rajamani shook his head vigorously, “I didn’t sign up for this. Captain should have said something. I would have sent someone else.”

“Chill… These things don’t last long. One, maybe, two months, we back to your daughter.”

“What? 1-2 months? I have to speak to the captain.”

“Hoola… Hoola.. I was joking…”

The submarine descended steadily, the pressure of the ocean pressing against its hull like a giant hand.

“Fuhget ‘bout dat t’ing, jus focus on de process an’ hand.”

Rajamani reluctantly sat in the cramped kitchen, his tools spread out on the bolted-down table, the faint hum of the engines vibrating through the floor.

Mali bustled around him, preparing a simple meal of rice and lentils, the aroma filling the small space and offering a fleeting sense of comfort.

The noise from Mali’s cooking preparations reminded Rajamani of the rhythmic patter of droplets against the earth. He could almost smell the petrichor rising from the ground. Rain was life. It nourished the soil, filled the rivers, and brought forth the crops that fed millions. It was both the giver and the gift, a cycle of sustenance that sustained the world.

“துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய தூஉ மழை,” he sung under his breath.

Mali glanced at him, a curious smile playing on his lips. “Yuh a goin singin somethin yah, wha’ song yuh sing?”

Rajamani gave a bleak smile, “It is an Indian tune set in Amrutavarshini. The words are Thiruvalluvar’s.”

“Wah gwaan, yuh hear tell ‘bout a train station in India wit dat same name??”

“No, that is Thiruvallur, he was Thiruvalluvar.”

Rajamani looked up, his hands pausing over the oven’s wiring. “It’s an old Tamil saying. It means rain is both the source of food and food itself. Without rain, there is no life. It’s like… the ocean outside. It’s vast, mysterious, and sometimes terrifying, but it’s also what connects us all.”

Mali nodded thoughtfully, stirring the pot of lentils. “Yah know wah gwaan? Dat’s like cookin’, mon. Deh ingrediants deh aain’t nothin’ oh demselves, but wen yuh bring dem together, dem become somethin’ yute, ya hear? Somethin’ dat nourish not just yuh body, but yuh soul, too.”

Rajamani smiled, thinking of the real reason he was there on this metallic tube. “What accent is that? Barbarossa?”

“Dat’s Barbossa. Nuh, I a-yam Jamaican.”

“Each one to themselves. That’s why I love working with ovens. They’re like… alchemists. They transform flour, water, and yeast into bread—something warm, comforting, and full of life.”

The submarine shuddered suddenly, a deep groan echoing through the hull. The lights flickered, and Rajamani’s heart skipped a beat. Mali steadied himself against the counter, his expression tense. “Wah gwaan, mi a-go deeper.,” he said quietly. “Deh pressure yah… ees immense,” he clasped his hands around his neck and pretended to squeeze.

Rajamani glanced at the porthole, the inky blackness outside a stark reminder of their isolation. He thought of Lata, of her laughter, of the way her eyes lit up when she talked about Luffy and his adventures. He thought of Sahasranamam, his steady presence, his wisdom. And he thought of the rain, the way it had kissed his lips before he stepped into this metal beast.

“We’ll be okay,” Rajamani said, more to himself than to Mali. “We have to be.”

Hours passed, the submarine sinking further into the abyss. Rajamani worked tirelessly on the oven, his hands moving with practiced precision. The crew moved around him, their voices low and tense, their faces etched with worry. The pressure outside was relentless, a constant reminder of the fragile barrier between them and the crushing depths.

Mali approached him with a plate of food, steam rising from the warm rice and lentils. “Eat,” he said firmly. “Yuh cain’t wuk on a bweak up styomach.”

Rajamani hesitated, then accepted the plate with a grateful nod. The first bite was simple but comforting, the flavors a reminder of home. “This is good,” he said between mouthfuls and did a “Diable Jambe” move, mimicking Sanji.

“What was dat?” Mali asked.

“You remind me of Sanji from One Piece. That guy can turn the simplest ingredients into a feast fit for kings,” washing down the lentils with the soup that Mali had offered.

Mali went back to his cooking. He turned around and said, “Wah gwaan, an’ah a-wanna sing dat song agen. Mi lika dih.”

Rajamani’s thoughts drifting back to the rain. He imagined it falling on the fields, filling the rivers, feeding the crops. He imagined it falling on Lata’s face, her laughter ringing out as she danced in the downpour. Rain was life. It was hope. And even here, in the depths of the ocean, it reminded him of why he had come.

The submarine groaned again, louder this time, and the lights flickered ominously. Rajamani set his plate aside, his heart pounding. “What’s happening?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Mali’s expression was grim. “We’re at the limit. If we go any deeper…”

Rajamani noticed a little trickle of water near his shoes.

When the clouds deceive, withholding the rain, famine stalks the earth.

The submarine groaned again, a deep, metallic sound that reverberated through the narrow corridors. The lights flickered many times, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Rajamani’s hands trembled as he tightened the last bolt on the oven, his fingers slick with sweat. The air felt heavier now, thicker, as if the weight of the ocean above was pressing down on them, squeezing the life out of the vessel.

He tried his best to keep his focus on the task at hand - installing the oven.

Mali stood by the counter, his usual jovial demeanor replaced by a tense silence. He stirred a pot of soup, the aroma faint but comforting, though it did little to ease the growing tension. The crew moved about with hurried steps, their faces pale, their voices hushed. The submarine was at its limit, and everyone knew it.

Rajamani wiped his brow and glanced at the porthole. The darkness outside was absolute, a void that seemed to swallow all light and hope. He thought of the rain again, of the way it had promised life but now felt impossibly far away. The old Tamil verse echoed in his mind:

If clouds that promised rain deceive, and in the sky remain, famine, sore torment, stalks o’er earth’s vast ocean-girdled plain.

The words felt hauntingly relevant. The submarine was like the clouds that had promised safety, but now, trapped in the depths, it felt like a betrayal. The crew’s hope was dwindling, and with it, their strength. Rajamani could see it in their eyes—the fear, the exhaustion, the gnawing hunger that went beyond the physical. It was a hunger for hope, for a way out, for the promise of life above.

Mali broke the silence, his voice low but steady. “Di soup a ready. Yuh know, ees not much, but ees somethin’.” He ladled the thin broth into bowls and handed one to Rajamani. “Tek eat yuh, ya’ve bie workin’ non-stop.”

It reminded him of Sanji’s philosophy—that food was more than sustenance; it was a way to keep the spirit alive, even in the darkest times. “This is good,” he said quietly. “It’s like… a small piece of home. “Yuh had fi squeeze in a One Piece irrefren, " said Mali.

“Perils of being around an 8-year old obsessed with anime, besides the Luminous Literary Minds at Pune Writers Group asked me not to lecture them.”

Bowl in hand, Rajamani flicked the switched of the oven to make sure it was in working order, after all, that was part of his contract with the Navy.

The submarine shuddered violently, and the lights flickered again, this time staying dim for longer. An alarm blared, sharp and insistent, cutting through the silence. Rajamani set his bowl down, his heart racing. “What’s happening now?”

Mali’s face turned grim. “Wah gwaan? Wah happenin’ fi lose power yah? Yuh gotta come up pon de surface ‘fore t’ing get worsa.…” He didn’t finish the sentence, but the implication was clear. The submarine was running out of time.

Meaning, if the rain doesn’t come, the farmer’s plough has to stop.”

“Dearest Lata, this may be the last letter I write to you, " Rajamani put the pen down wondering if it was his last hour.

Thirty-six hours earlier, Rajamani had entered a submarine and met his friend and chef, Mali. Unexpectedly, the submarine went underwater. Rajamani started working on the real job that he was hired to do on the sub, installing his magic oven. But, the sub had descended too deep. The crew was working to pull themselves out of the abyss, when there was a sudden power loss.

Mali’s face turned grim. “Wah happenin’ fi lose power yah? Yuh gotta come up pon de surface ‘fore t’ing get worsa.…” He didn’t finish the sentence, but the implication was clear. The submarine was running out of time. The red-hot heating elements of the oven overheated to turn into yellow.

The kitchen lights flickered, then went out completely, plunging the room into darkness. For a moment, there was only silence, heavy and suffocating. Then, with a faint hum, the oven’s display lit up, casting a soft glow across the kitchen. But even that soon faded, leaving them in utter blackness. The sub shook violently, tilting forward as if the ground beneath them had shifted. Rajamani stumbled, his hands flailing for something to hold onto. The loud noises subsided, leaving an eerie silence.

“Mali… Are you there?” Rajamani called, his voice trembling. All he heard was faint mumbling. He began to move cautiously, hands outstretched, feeling his way through the darkness. His foot touched something soft and squishy. He knelt, his hands brushing against fabric, then something warm and damp. It was Mali. “Mali… Mali…” he called again, his voice echoing. There was no response, only labored breathing.

“Mi a… good… Mi get… some… wheeze… Pressure… low… Yah, mi a… keep… talkin’… fi yuh…”

“I’ll go call for help…” said Rajamani, ready to leap out.

“No… stay…”

He got hold of Mali’s hands and held it.

Rajamani’s mind raced. He thought of the Thirukkural:

ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்

வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.

If the rain doesn’t come, the farmer’s plough has to stop.

The words echoed in his mind, a reminder of how even the most skilled are at the mercy of forces beyond their control. Just as a farmer cannot sow or reap without rain, Rajamani realized he, too, was powerless in this moment. He had no control over the power drain, the shaking sub, or the darkness enveloping them.

“One… piece… daughter…”

He narrated an example from One Piece. In the Alabasta arc, the people suffered due to a lack of rain. Crocodile, the antagonist, had manipulated the environment to create a drought, leaving the farmers and citizens helpless. No matter how hard they worked, their efforts were futile without rain. It was a stark parallel to the Thirukkural’s wisdom—a reminder that some things are beyond human control, no matter how much we strive or plan.

Rajamani clenched his fists, frustration and helplessness washing over him. He had always prided himself on solving problems, fixing what was broken. But now, he was as powerless as the farmer waiting for rain. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Mali, hang on,” he whispered, more to himself than to his unconscious friend. “We’ll get through this.”

The darkness pressed in, but Rajamani refused to give in to despair. He knew that, just as the rain eventually comes to the farmer, light would return to them. Until then, he would do what he could, even if it meant waiting in the dark.

In the darkness that ensued, Mali had an asthmatic attack and Rajamani decided to stay right next to him to comfort him.

The darkness in the kitchen was suffocating, but Rajamani’s mind was racing. The Thirukkural he had recalled earlier now took on a deeper meaning:

கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே

எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை.

Rain by its absence ruins men; and by its existence restores them to fortune.”

It was a stark reminder of how nature—or fate—could both destroy and rebuild. The power drain had brought them to the brink of ruin, but perhaps there was still a way to turn things around.

The lights came back on.

Rajamani took off Mali’s chef hat to use it as a pillow.

I don’t think I can hang on any longer just waiting around.

As though Mali could read his thoughts, Mali pointed to a peculiar device mounted on the wall.

“Is that a communication device?”

Rajamani picked up the handset and said, “Hello.. hello.. I am Rajamani from the kitchen. Anybody… anybody… we need help.”

“Not now. We are busy.”

“Medical emergency, Chef Mali is not doing well.”

All he could hear was a crackle. He wondered if they heard him.

“Hello… Hello…”

No response.

The darkness in the kitchen was suffocating, but Rajamani’s mind raced. The Thirukkural he had recalled earlier echoed in his thoughts: “Rain by its absence ruins men; and by its existence restores them to fortune.” The power drain he caused had brought them to ruin, but perhaps, like rain, there was still a chance for redemption.

A loud hiss pierced the air, followed by the sound of rushing water.

The water level started rising. Rajamani’s immediate concern was Mali.

Rajamani attempted to support Mali, but the torund chef lay listless and unresponsive. He carefully positioned himself under Mali’s armpits and strained to lift him into a more upright position. However, Mali’s weight proved too great, leaving Rajamani struggling to budge him.

“We’ve got a leak!” someone shouted. Panic spread as water flooded in, the sub groaning under the pressure. Rajamani’s heart pounded. He had caused this, but the kural’s wisdom gave him hope. “We need to patch the leak!” he yelled. “The oven—it’s made of heat-resistant metal. We can use it to seal the breach!”

No one heard him.

The water level kept rising, immersing Mali underwater. Rajamani struggled to keep him above water, so that he had a fighting chance.

“C’mon, Mali! Work with me. Up…”

“Wah gwaan?”

Thirty-six hours earlier, Rajamani entered a submarine and met his friend and chef, Mali. Installing his magic oven was his intended job. However, the sub had descended too deep, and a sudden power loss occurred, when Rajamani tried to test his oven. A pipeline gave way, causing water to seep in as the crew tried to fix the power. With the water level rising, unconscious Mali was in grave danger.

Mali’s limp body suddenly rose above the water.

Rajamani looked up to see Captain Caspian himself.

“Skipper…” Rajamani sobbed hard.

“No worries, mate, am here,” said the Captain with a strong Australian accent. In spite of thin and tall frame, the Captain showed immense strength and moved Mali on top of the kitchen countertop.

“The kitchen sink will drain the water for a little while, but we don’t have a lot of time. Stop.. I am here now.”

“Sir, it is all my fault. I ran the oven to test if it was working, since you told me that there are no second chances for me, " Rajamani said in the middle of his sobbing.

“Ohhhhhh…”

Caspian pulled out a walkie-talkie from his back pocket. “XO, we’ve found the power surge source. Don’t start the power yet.”

“But Sir, how do we stop this water from rising?”

“Boy, when the power stops, everything stops,” said the Captain, while looking around to locate the oven.

“XO, now try the power.”

The lights came back on.

Mali stirred from his stupor.

“One… Piece…”

“Is he asphyxiated? Why is he saying random things?”

“No, Sir, I have been telling him stories from the anime One Piece to keep him going.”

Caspian shrugged and said, “The pumps should start working now. Keep this walkie-talkie with you. The Medics are very busy, but I’ll tell them about Pudding.”

After Caspian left, Rajamani narrated an episode from One Piece when Orochi and Kaido poisoned the water and the Wano people couldn’t cultivate anything.

“Mali.. Mali… Are you awake?”

Thirty-six hours earlier, Rajamani descended into the depths of a submarine to install his magic oven, only to find himself face-to-face with his old friend and chef, Mali. However, as he attempted to test the oven, the submarine’s descent proved too drastic, triggering an unexpected power loss that sent alarms blaring throughout the vessel. The crew frantically scrambled to repair the damage, but a burst pipeline released a deluge of water into the sub’s interior, threatening to engulf them all. As the situation spiralled out of control, Captain Caspian sprang into action, together with Rajamani, to rescue his comatose friend, Mali, by heaving him to safety just as the water level was rising. But despite their efforts, Mali soon slumped unconscious once more, leaving Rajamani and the captain to worry over his fate.

“Captain.. cap… Mali is breathing, but not moving…” said Rajamani over the walkie-talkie.

“He’ll be fine. We have bigger problems. The water level is rising because some of the big pumps are submerged and only the small ones are working. The oxygen level is also at a dangerously low level. Hang in there, we are working on it.”

The walkie-talkie fell silent.

What am I to do? Mali is dying. The sub is dying. All because of me. Did I have to test that oven when the sub was underwater? All because of this metallic monster.

He took a hammer out of his tool belt, waded through the water and started pounding his oven, smashing it to smitherins.

He sobbed loudly.

“Lata, when will I ever see you again? Is this it? Is my number up too? Like Mali?”

He continued sobbing.

Rajamani found a piece of paper in the broken pieces of the oven. The warranty manual.

He pulled out his pen and started to write.

“Dearest Lata, this may be the last letter I write to you, " Rajamani put the pen down wondering if it was his last hour.

“No, it is not. What did Usopp, the self-proclaimed coward stepped up against all odds to build something ingeniously.”

“Yes, ingeniously…”

He took a large piece of metal from the broken fragments of the oven.

“Captain.. captain. I have an idea.”

“Captain, I can patch the hole with a large piece from my oven.”

“Move toward the direction I left you. Help the people who are trying to seal the leak.”

He put his walkie-talkie back in his pocket. He carried the flat metal piece up to the crew members. They were taken aback seeing someone in civvies.

“Here, I just spoke to Skipper. He asked me to help you. Take this and seal the hole.”

“It will not work,” said the crew member. He had a gash on the side of his forehead.

“No, it should work. I’ll help you.”

“Do you have an oxy-acetylene torch?”

“No, we don’t want to use up any oxygen. We only rivets, since power is also at a premium now.”

“Here, use this. I think we’ll need more pieces. I’ll get what I have.”

After several trips, the crew seemed to have slowed the leak.

“What about the oxygen pump?”

“We are trying to use those crystals to get oxygen now. We had to choose between the pump or the oxygen, so we are alternating.”

Thud. Crash.

“What was that?”

“That’s another pipeline which gave way. The leak is enormous.”

The Captain’s voice on the radio. “All hands, divert all remaining battery power to water pumps.”

The crew member started to grumble. “But Sir, the oxygen?”

“If we drown, you won’t need the oxygen. That’s an order, sailor. Divert now.”

As the hours dragged on, the truth of their fate became undeniable. The pumps struggled, but the water continued to rise, relentless in its advance. Oxygen thinned, each breath a silent prayer. The crew, their faces lined with unspoken dread, knew they were running out of time.

Rajamani had worked very hard. He had pulled out every scrap metal there was in the kitchen and tried to seal every leak. But now he sat motionless, his thoughts heavy. He had sought redemption, but the sea was indifferent and relentless. Like the heavens withholding rain, it denied him the mercy he needed.

The submarine, which was supposed to his hotel for a day now faced the consequence of the dark oblivion. He was reminded of Kaido, the horrible monster, who had to kill Luffy to get his due.

The might and supreme submarine was nothing but a mere speck, lay in wait for the inveitable-become one with nature.

If the heaven dry up, neither yearly festivals, nor daily worship will be offered in this world, to the celestials.

If rain fall not, penance and alms-deeds will not dwell within this spacious world.

Rajamani descended into the depths of a submarine to install his magic oven, only to find himself face-to-face with his old friend and chef, Mali. Rajamani has a brainwave in the middle of the crisis, but his solution didn’t last for long. The crew waited for the inevitable.

“He’s not even a crew member, why should he get the oxygen tank? Pudding should get it, " yelled one of the crew members. Others joined it amidst all the coughing, grunting and moaning.

Captain Caspian McCoy stood tall amidst all the chaos.

“This crew is one of the finest with sailors from all over the world. You have to be protected at all costs. Your lives are more important to me than anyone else in the world. Given the choice between my family and you guys, I choose you…”

Everyone listened to him in rapt silence.

“But, what is the motto of our boat?”

“Nemo Peribit. None will perish.”

Rajamani leaned against the wall, haunted by the thought of never seeing Lata, his 8-year old daughter, and Sahasranamam, his baker dad, again. Suddenly, a memory surfaced.

“Excuse me, Skipper. I might have a way.”

He pulled out a paper from his pocket.

“Here, look at the schematic of the oven.”

“A backup power source in the oven?”

“Do you think it will power the entire submarine?”

“No not the entire submarine, only the vital pumps which can pull us up to the surface.”

“If we reroute it, we might restart the systems,” he said, his voice cutting through the silence.

“XO, do you think it will work?”

“I am not sure how much power is stored in this thing now.”

“I got it fully charged and…”

“And..?”

“That caused the power surge in your electrical systems. This is a different system than what I was asked to install, Captain.”

“Well, what are you waiting for? Get cracking already,”

The crew sprang into action, their movements urgent. Rajamani worked feverishly, his hands trembling as he accessed the oven’s power source. Sparks flew, and the lights flickered, but the systems failed to fully restart. Tensions rose as the air grew thinner. “This isn’t working!” someone shouted.

Rajamani’s mind raced. He recalled the ancient Tamil kural: “If rain falls not, penance and alms-deeds will not dwell within this spacious world.” Just as rain sustains life, their survival hinged on this one chance. Then, he thought of One Piece—the Straw Hat crew’s relentless fight to save the Going Merry as it crumbled in Enies Lobby. Their refusal to give up inspired him.

With renewed determination, he adjusted the connections. The crew watched in tense silence as the systems roared back to life. Lights brightened, and the ballast pumps came to life. They were moving upwards. Cheers erupted, relief washing over them.

Rajamani slumped against the wall, exhausted. They had faced the abyss and emerged victorious.

  • How often do we take water for granted in our daily lives?

If it be said that the duties of life cannot be discharged by any person without water, so without rain there cannot be the flowing of water.

The submarine’s control room buzzed with tension as Rajamani rerouted the oven’s power, restoring the vessel’s critical systems. The dim lights flickered back, but the fix was temporary. Captain Caspian’s urgent Aussie voice cut through the chaos: “We’ve got to surface, mates. Now.”

As the submarine ascended, the damaged hull groaned under the crushing pressure. The crew braced themselves, fear etched on their faces. Rajamani turned to Mali, the Jamaican chef whose easygoing demeanor had been a comfort. “If this is it,” Rajamani said with a wry smile, “let’s go out with a bang. Or at least a loaf of bread.”

Mali chuckled. “You’re mad, man. But I like it.” They kneaded dough with trembling hands, defying their impending doom with the simple act of baking. As the submarine shuddered, the smell of fresh bread filled the air, a small comfort amidst the chaos. “This better be the best damn bread ever,” Mali joked, despite the fear in his eyes.

Miraculously, the submarine broke the surface. The crew erupted in cheers as sunlight streamed through the portholes. Rajamani slumped against the galley wall, clutching the warm loaf. Captain Caspian clapped his shoulder. “You’re a bloody legend, mate. Who knew an oven could save us all?”

Mali raised a slice of bread in mock salute. “To Rajamani, the one-piece hero of the deep! Luffy’s got nothing on you, man.” Laughter replaced tension as they celebrated survival.

Back on land, Rajamani felt changed. The ocean, once a source of fear, now held an odd allure. As he baked a loaf at home, he recounted his adventure to wide-eyed friends. Breaking off a piece of bread, he mused, “Like that old kural says—without rain, no water; without water, no life. And without a little madness, no story worth telling.”

He smiled, savoring the warm bread. The ocean had tested him but also gifted him newfound respect—for its depths and the unlikely heroes who sailed them.

📜 TAD - Chapter 2:1 - Rain, the Ambrosia: How Small Acts Create Big Impact

Rajamani embarks on a journey aboard a submarine, leaving behind his daughter, Lata, and his wise father, Sahasranamam. As he steps into the vessel, a single raindrop touches his lips—a reminder of Thiruvalluvar’s wisdom:

👉 வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால் தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று “By the continuance of rain, the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia.”

Inside the submarine, a small act of kindness leads Rajamani to Mali, the ship’s cook, reminding him of Luffy and Sanji from One Piece—a bond formed over food and friendship. Just like rain sustains life, small moments of connection and wisdom sustain our spirits.

💡 How does something small—a raindrop, a kind gesture, a lesson—create ripples of change? 💡 Can wisdom truly bridge generations, cultures, and even anime universes?
